Orangeburgh District) WILLIAM DUNBAR Administrator of all and singular the goods and Chattels Rights and Credits which were of JOSEPH BRAZEL deceased was summoned to answer WILLIAM ROBERTSON in a plea of Trespass upon the Case and soforth and whereupon the said WILLIAM ROBERTSON by JOHN EWING COTHOUN his Attorney Complains That whereas the said WILLIAM ROBERTSON on the Twenty Ninth day of July in the year of our Lord one thousand seven hundred and Eighty one in the District of Orangeburgh in the state of South Carolina and within the Jurisdiction of this hounrable Court was possessed of a Certain Negro man slave named MINGO and a Bay Mare as of his own proper goods and Chattels and being so thereof possessed Casually tot the said Negro Man Slave and Bay Mare out of his hands and possession which said Negro Man Slave and Bay Mare afterwards to wit on the said thirtieth day of July in the year of our Lord aforesaid in the District and State aforesaid into the hands and possession of the said JOSEPH BRAZEL in his Lifetime by finding came NEVERTHELESS the said JOSEPH BRAZEL in his Lifetime knowing the said Negro Man Slave and Bay Mare to be of the proper goods and Chattles of the said WILLIAM ROBERTSON and to him of right to belong and appertain Yet contriving and fraudulently intending the said WILLIAM ROBERTSON in this Behalf Craftilly and subtilly to deceive and defraud of the said Negro Man Slave and Bay Mare the said JOSEPH BRAZEL in his Lifetime and the said WILLIAM DUNBAR Administrator of aforesaid since the Death of the said JOSEPH BRAZEL have not nor hath either of them delivered the said Negro Man Slave or Bay Mare although the said JOSEPH BRAZEL in his Lifetime to wit on the Tenth day of September in the year of our Lord one thousand seven hundred and Eighty one and the said WILLIAM DUNBAR Administrator as aforesaid often times since the Death of the said JOSEPH BRAZEL were required by the said WILLIAM ROBERTSON so to do but the Said JOSEPH BRAZEL in his lifetime afterwards (that is to say on the said thirtieth day of July in the District aforesaid Converted the said Negro Man Slave and Bay Mare to his own proper Use to the Damage of the said WILLIAM ROBERTSON Two hundred pounds Sterling Money and therefore He brings his Suit and soforth.

In the settlement of his estate, dated 12 Jan 1789, distribution of his property is made among his widow, ELIZABETH the manor plantation, except for 30 acres, during her natural life); son RICHARD, JR. (the "plantation tract of land whereon he now lives," and another tract his father purchased from JOHN YELVERTON); son SHADRACK (part of "the manor plantation after the death of his mother," and 1/2 of a 30-acre tract of pine woods patented by ELIAS FORT); son DAVID ("part of the manor plantation after the death of his mother," and 1/2 of the pine woods.); son SAMPSON (200 acres of a tract patented by ELIAS FORT), son JESSE (the remainder of tract containing 200 acres, and 30 acres of the manor plantation). It was signed by RICHARD BRASWELL, SAMPSON BRASWELL, SHADRACK BRASWELL, DAVID BRASWELL and JESSE BRASWELL. A further distribution gave cattle, certain household goods and slaves to his widow and the same children mentioned above, but also adds RODAH, ANNEY SAUL, JESSE BRIDGERS and MARY BRIDGERS. It is signed by BENJAMIN FORT, THOMAS SAUNDERS, JAMES EDMONDSON and NOAH YELVERTON. Another distribution, dated 7 Feb 1799, alloted to MARY and JESSE BRIDGERS, children of JAMES BRIDGERS and grandchildren of RICHARD, certain money, slaves and cattle. This was signed by JOHN BLOW, JESSE BRASWELL, JOHN SAULS, RICHARD BRASWELL and DAVID BRASWELL.

Henry Shadock, Chatham Co., NC, 1778



Henry Shadock was a neighbor and associate of the Braswells in Chatham County, North Carolina, which is why his will is included in this collection. Could Richard Worthen be related to William Wortham who married Joseph Braswell's supposed daughter, Sarah?


1778 - June 2, In the name of God Amen I Henry Shadock being at this time in a low state of health but of good memory at this present time Blessed be Almighty God for it making this my last Will and Testament. First I commit my Soul to God that gave it me in hopes of a Joyful Resurrection through the Merits of my Blessed Savior Jesus Christ. Next my Body to have a hansom and dessent Burrel by those I shall leave behind me. Item I give my Daughter Charity Worthen one Negro Man named Jack and all the Rest of my Household furniture and all Bonds and Accounts that is due to me only fifty pounds that I give and Bequeath to my Daughter Prudance Laws to be paid out of my Estate and no more and all the Rest of my Whole Estate to be Charrety Worthens and her heirs forever. Item I give to my son Ezekel Shadocks one shilling sterling and no more. Iten I give to my Daughter Rachel Crain one shilling Sterling and no more. Item I give to my Daughter Comfort Powel one Shilling Sterling and no more. Item I give to my Daughter Easter Brantley one Shilling Sterling and no more. Item I give to my Daughter Ame Hill one Shilling Sterling and no more. And I do nomenate and appoint my son in law Richard Warthen to be my whole and sole Executor of this my last Will and Testament in Witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand and affixed my seal this second day of June 1778.
