Drewry Braswell Halifax Co., NC 1797

This Indenture made this 28th day of February in the year of our Lord One thousand Seven hundred & Ninety Seven Between Drewry Braswell & Lydia his wife of Halifax County & State of North Carolina of the one part, and James Powell of the County & State aforesaid, of the other part witnesseth that the aforesaid Braswell & Lydia his wife for & in Consideration of the Sum of thirty-Seven pounds Current money of the State aforesaid to them in hand paid before the Sealing & delivering hereof the said Braswell & Lydia his wife doth hereby acknowledge themselves fully satisfied & paid and of every part hereof Doth hereby acquit, Discharge the said Powell & his heirs hath Granted Sold & Conveyed & confirmed by these presents doth fully & clearly Grant, sell & Convey & confirm to him the said Powell his heirs & assigns all our Right & Title to our thirds of a certain piece of Land formerly the property of Marmaduke Strickland dec'd lying and being in the County & State afsd. bounded as follows to wit, Beginning at a pine in Abner Br-ms Dec'd line there -- along the Said Dec'd Line to a red oak in John Strickland's Line, then up the afsd. Stricklands Line to a post oak Stump, From thence to the first Station, the Same Containing fifty acres be the Same more or less. To Have & to hold the Said tract of Land with all the priviledges & appertenences thereunto belonging and the Said Braswell & Lydia his wife at the Sealing & delivering of these presents, am Lawfully posessed of the Same with all it's appertenances thereunto belonging & have in our selves Good right full power and lawfull Authority to sell & dispose of like Manner the Same being clearly acquited & dischardged from all former & manner of Gifts Grants, Bargains Sales & all other incumbrances whatsoever to the only proper use - Behoof of the Said Powell his heirs & assigns against the lawful claim or claims demand or demands of any person or persons whatsoever.

Update June 13, 2008:

The following deed seems to clarify the above Abner's last name:

1796 - January 1, James and Mary Hodges to Abner Bruce all of Halifax Co. for £201 Va. money, 272 acres in Halifax Co. beginning on the south side of Deep Creek to a black gum in Ogburn Hale's line on the branch and following the branch to a sweet gum in Harmon Stricklands line then 306 poles to a pine in Harmon Stricklands corner on the creek and along the various courses of the creek to the first station."
