Note: Originally Carl Braswell believed that his VALENTINE BRASWELL was the man by that name who appeared on the Greenville District, South Carolina Census of 1790, but Eunice Young pointed out that was another Valentine who belongs to her family, which is also the family of Carey Bracewell. He is on p. 69 along with his father Richard Sr., and brothers Richard, James, and John, (my ancestor), etc. She wrote:
“Carl shows that his Valentine was born 1770-1780, as was his wife. Their youngest son, Jonathan was born ca. 1821-181?, so the mother was born nearer to 1780 than 1770, as she would have been 42 at least at the birth of Jonathan. Valentine was likely born 1775-1780, so they could not have had a daughter born ca. 1786, as the mother would have been 6 years old. Carl shows a 13 year gap before the birth of David, the eldest son. I don’t think this happened! Note that David was 19 when he married, and Wesley was 21, pretty average there."
“There is no Valentine on the 1800 census index for Greenville, South Carolina as ours had gone to Knoxville, Tennessee area in the 1790’s and Carl’s ancestor had not yet showed up there. I have long wondered who this other Valentine was in Greenville, as all of ours had left by 1808.”
Carl Braswell's article continues with Valentine BRASWELL who appears on the census records in the census of 1810 Greenville County, South Carolina. This record shows four males, 0-9 (Wesley; William W., probably Mihile, and one other, neither of which can be further identified); one male, 11-16 (David); one male, 27-45 (Valentine); one female, 0-9 (possibly Matilda); one female, 10-16 (Creasey); one female, 27-45 (Valentine’s unidentified wife).
From there he moved to Madison County, Georgia where he appears on the 1820 census as Valentine BRAZWELL The record list two males, 0-9 (Jonathan, and David’s son Larkin); two males, 10-15 (Mihille and one unidentified); three males, 16-26 (David, Wesley and William W.) and one male, 45 and over (Valentine), two females, 0-9 (Matilda and Susan); two females 16-26 (Creasey and David’s wife, Polly aka Mary); one female, 27-44 (Valentine’s wife).
In 1830 he is found on the census records in Walton County, Georgia. The record list one male, 5-9 (Jonathan); one male, 10-14 (Ephraim); one male, 50-59 (Valentine); one female, 10-14 (unidentified); two females, 15-19 (Matilda, Susan) and one female, 50-59 Valentine’s wife). Also listed on the 1830 census are his sons, David, with him in Walton Co., Georgia.; Wesley in nearby Newton County, Georgia.; and William BRASSELL, still in Madison County, Georgia. (His oldest sons).
In 1840 Valentine does not appear on any census records. David and William W. are still in Walton County where they remained for many years; Wesley (spelled BRAZIL an the 1840 census & BRAZEL in the 1850 census) was then in nearby Dekalb County where he lived for many years. Ephraim appears for the first time in the 1840 census in Walton County, then until his death in 1887 in Gwinnett County. All of Valentine’s sons were prominent cotton farmers owning large farms as later census records show. One daughter, Susan, married into a prominent Gwinnett county family.
The record of the “1832 Gold Lottery of Georgia,” (this was the final dividing of the former Cherokee Nation), shows Valentine BRASWELL in Carroll County, Georgia. (About fifty miles west of present day Atlanta.) Valentine was granted land in the Mullins Militia District Land lot # 873, district 21, section 2. This land was situated in what is now the southern part of Paulding and Polk Counties. My grandfather, Jacob Valentine BRASWELL, owned land in Paulding and Polk Counties and had lived for many years in this very area when I was a boy.
Henry BRASWELL, son of Wesley, moved to Paulding County sometime before 1860. He, his wife and two children are listed in Paulding County in the 1860 Georgia census. This is the area where my great grandfather Newton John BRASWELL migrated with his family, including my grandfather Jacob Valentine, around 1890. My father James Doyal BRASWELL (b. 1901) and his brother John B. BRASWELL (b. 1893) were born in Paulding County.
The date of Valentine’s death has not been confirmed at this point.
Children:
Creasey BRASWELL (?) Born c. 1786 (?). In the 1810 Greenville County, South Carolina census Valentine is shown to have a daughter under age 10 (possibly Matilda); one between 11 and 16, (most likely Creasey) and one adult female between 27 and 45, his wife.

In the Georgia 1850 census Ephraim is listed in Gwinnett County with David and William still in Walton, Wesley (spelled BRAZEL this time) in Dekalb. The last mention of Valentine found in records is in the “1832 Georgia Gold Lottery,” living in Carroll County, Georgia and receiving a land grant in what is now Paulding and Polk counties.
In the Georgia 1860 census Ephraim is listed as E. L. BRUELL in the Yellow River P.O. district; a farmer, real property valued at $2000; personal property valued at $5000 and showed owning two slaves. David and William W. continues to be listed in Walton County, Wesley BRASWELL (now spelled correctly again) in Dekalb.
