To All Christian People to whom these presents shall come I Hermun Strickland of the province of North Carolina Halifax County send Greeting Know Ye that I Harmund Strickland for and in consideration of the love good will & affection which I have and do bear towards my loving son Harmon Strickland of the County and province afsd have given and granted and by these presents do fully freely clearly and absolutely give and grant to the said Harmond Strickland his heirs and assigns all that one certain peace & parcel of land situate lying in the East side of Deep Creek Beginning at James Hoguns corner ---- on the run of the said Creek thence along said Hoguns line to a corner pine in said line thence North 140 po. to a pine in the Indian Branch thence down the said Branch to the run of the Creek to a corner ---- then down the said Creek to the first Station containing by estimation two hundred acres more or less the said land was granted by a deed from Frances Corbin Esqr. to Hermon Strickland Senr Bearing date September 17th 1744 together with all the right title interest claim and --- and whatsoever which I now have in which any or either of my heirs Exrs administrators or assigns may thereafter have of to or in the said granted premises or any part thereof To have and to hold the said land unto him the said Harmon Strickland his heirs and assigns for ever absolutely without any manner of condition as I the said Hermun Strickland have fully freely and absolutely and of my own accord set and put in further Testimony In Witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand and seal this 20th day of October, 1774.

Priscilla & Elizabeth Braswell & Jacob Johnson

Hello,
I have been trying to find out more information on a Priscilla Braswell born 1817. She had 9 childred one of which is my GGgrandfather Kindred, who is buried at Salem Seminole Cementery in Decatur GA. The problem I am having is that the family records show that this Priscilla Braswell was born in 1797 and her children are the children of Jacob Johnston, which I believe is incorrect due to the fact that if it was true, her youngest child Mary Prisilla would have been born when Pricilla was 62. Kindred moved to Decatur between 1860-1900 and married Mary Katherine Faircloth. If you could would you please help me find out if Kindred was illegimate or which Braswell was his father?

It has been thought by some that Elizabeth & Priscilla Braswell were the daughters of Jacob Braswell & Nancy Cotton of Edgecombe County North Carolina. Jacob & Nancy did indeed have daughters named Elizabeth born December 22, 1791 and Priscilla born November 18, 1797, recorded in their Family Bible. Jacob & Nancy's daughter Priscilla married a Newsom as indicated in this deed:


1841 - September 11, Priscilla Newsom, Baldwin Co., GA to William Pender, Edge. Co. for $25, a tract of land adjoining the lands of James Sherrod, Jesse C. Knight and others it being an undivided interest in the lands of the late Jacob Braswell, dec'd, it being one ninth part of the lands of the said deceased, belonging to Priscilla Newsom as one of the lawful representatives of said Jacob, signed Alexander Braswell, atty for Priscilla Newsom, wit. Jas. M. Redman, Louis C. Pender. Recorded November court 1841. (Edgecombe Co., NC DB 22 Pg. 698) FHC film 0370237, CTC.

Priscilla Braswell common law wife of Jacob Johnson on the census gives her age accordingly:


1850 = age 38 about 1812 Randolph Co., GA
1860 = age 43 about 1817 Randolph Co., GA
1870 = age 50 about 1820 Decatur Co., GA

Her sister Elizabeth Braswell legal wife of Jacob Johnson gives her age:

1850 = age 34 about 1816 Randolph Co., GA
1860 = age 49 about 1811 Randolph Co., GA
1870 = age 64 about 1806 Decatur Co., GA
1880 = age 68 about 1812 Decatur Co., GA


Fortunately clues to the parents of Priscilla & Elizabeth can be found in naming patterns, location and a few records. The fact that Priscilla names a son Kindred and Elizabeth names a daughter Rhoda leads one to believe the girls are grand daughters of Kindred & Rhoda Braswell. But this in and of itself it not enough.


The fact that they are found in Decatur County Georgia is also important. But there is more evidence to substantiate this theory. We know that Kindred Braswell Jr. left a will in 1853 in Thomas Co., GA wherein he mentions his deceased daughter Elizabeth Ferrell. So he can be eliminated as a possible parent. His younger brother Samuel who married Sabra Brinson can also be eliminated as his oldest child was born about 1820 and the census records and the names just don't fit.


That leaves us with Robert who appears to have been married twice. His first wife is unknown to me but appears to be the mother of at least David Braswell of Laurens County Georgia who married Lucinda and their known (to me) children appear to be Tilda, Robert, Rosey, Rowan & James D. Interestingly, Priscilla Braswell names a son David Rowan, perhaps another naming pattern clue.

I believe that the 20 -30 year old female in the home of Lucy Braswell in 1840 is Priscilla Braswell and that she is the daughter of Robert Braswell. I also believe that Jacob Johnson on the 1830 census in Decatur Co., GA is the husband of Elizabeth Braswell and they appear to be newlyweds without children. Their first child was born about 1832 and in 1840, 1850 & 1860 they are in Randolph Co., GA but by 1870 have returned to Decatur County.

The children of Priscilla & Elizabeth Braswell are descendants of the Reverend Robert Bracewell through his grandson Robert Braswell whose wife was Sarah. Robert's will is filed in Bertie Co., NC 1734.

1750 - February 4, ROBERT BRASWELL, son of ROBERT BRASWELL decd, and WILLIAM BRASWELL of Johnston Co. to BRYAN DAUGHTREE of Nhmtn, for 20 pds Va., 100 a. on S/S of Uraha Swamp "being a tract of land which the said WILLIAM BRASWELL sold to JOHN BOYD which joins the said BOYDs line on the South West side beginning at the mouth of Great Branch and down Uraha Swamp to the mouth of Poplar Branch then up the sd branch the several courses thereof to a marked Pine & corner tree then by a Line of marked trees to a White Oak standing in the said Great Branch then down the branch to the first station". Bill Field's comments on the above two deeds -

The above 300 acres appear to be land that ROBERT BRASWELL of Bertie bought and bequeathed by his will of 1736 to his son RICHARD (He bought 200 acres in 1723 from JOHN and SARAH STEWARD (Bertie DB A, 239) and 100 acres in 1728 from WILLIAM BRASWEL (Bertie DB C, 3). That his son ROBERT was able to sell the land suggests that RICHARD had died without other heirs.


The wording in the second deed above must be erroneous in calling this the land which "the said WILLIAM BRASWELL sold to JOHN BOYD" for this is surely the land that WILLIAM had sold ROBERT and it did, in fact, adjoin the 300 acre tract that WILLIAM had sold JOHN BOYD in 1734 (Bertie DB D, 150 & 313). Presumably WILLIAM still had some claim against the land, hence the necessity of a joint deed.

1757 - April 7, ROBERT BRASSWELL appears in Granville Co., SC and receives a plat of 100 acres on Little River which was later cut into Abbeville Co., SC. He is believed to be the father of brothers ROBERT & KINDRED BRASWELL who crossed the river from South Carolina into Georgia about 1764 and ask for land at Bark Camp presumably single young men as they did not mention wives or children to facilitate larger land grants.

In the name of God Amen. I Edmund Spencer of the Parish of St. Luke and the County of
Southampton being sick & weak of body but of sound and disposing mind and memory thanks be given to almighty God for the same, do make and constitute this my last will and testament in form and manner following. Imprimis
I give and bequeath to my two Sons David & William and their heirs forever the plantation whereon I now live & land there unto belonging, to be equally divided between them, but if either of my said Sons should die without heirs lawfully begotten of his body, my will and desire is that the Survivor should hold the whole tenement hereby intended to be divided between them to him and his heirs forever.
I give and bequeath to my Son Ezekiel & his heirs forever the plantation whereon he now lives and land thereunto belonging, also two cows, six head of hogs & two sheep.
I lend to my Son in law Nathan Jackson & his wife Sarah the use of the land I purchased of Arthur Vick during both their lives and after their decease my will is that the said land be equally-----my surviving children or their heirs. Also I give my said Son in law two sheep.
I give and bequeath unto my Son Jesse & his heirs forever a tract or parcel of land containing by estimation fifty acres more or less lying and being situated on the South side of Dicks swamp also one cow & six head of hogs.
I give and bequeath to my Son David one ferrell mare bridle and saddle also one pair of silver shoe buckels one large ____ chest one long Gun and one feather bed & furniture.
I give and bequeath unto my son William one dark bay horse bridle and saddle, one small Gun and one feather bed & furniture.
My will and desire is that the whole of my store goods that remain unsold be equally divided between my wife Mary & all my childrn and one Case containing fifteen __ Bottles.
I give and bequeath to my son in law Drewry Beal one Case containing twelve __ Bottles also one large iron bound chest & two head of sheep.
I give to my daughter Elizabeth my flex wheel.
I lend to my wife Mary the use of the desk during her life and after her decease I give the same to my daughter Elizabeth also I give my said wife Mary six sheep to be at her own choosing out of my flock. I like wise lend the use of the bed & furniture whereon I now lie to my said wife Mary during her life and after her decease, I give the same to my daughter Elizabeth.
I furthermore devise that the plantation utensiles, hand mill, grind stone, pots & racks, box iron, all the bar & old iron cyder hogsheads barrels & c, woolen wheel & cards, Loom & Gear be and remain on the plantation for the use thereof.
I give and bequeath to my wife Mary & son David the remainder of my cattle & hogs that are not already disposed of for their use during the life of my said wife & at her demise I give the whole of what are left on the plantation to my Son David.
As to the remainder of my Estate not already disposed of my will & desire is that it be sold at the discretion of my Executors Hereafter named and the money arising theron after payment of my just debts and legal ___ be equally divided between my wife Mary & all my children.

This is not a Braswell will, nor does it mention any Braswells, but it is a key research document for the Braswells because Elizabeth Spencer's daughter married Elijah Braswell and Drewry Beal's brother in law Benjamin Johnston Jr witnessed the will of Richard Braswell.


1. Arthur Vick is the son/grandson of Richard Vick who owned land adjacent to Richard Braswell d. 1745 IOW Co., VA. Richard Vick bought Richard Braswell's land from William & Joseph Braswell.


2. Drewry Beal is the son of John Beal.


3. John Beal married Lydia Johnston sister of Benjamin Johnston Jr.


4. Benjamin Johnston Jr. witnessed the 1744 IOW Co., VA will of Richard Braswell.


5. According to the records Richard Braswell was the son of Susannah Burgess Braswell & Richard Towle. (See wills of Susannah & Towle in Document Archive)


6. Elizabeth Spencer married William Fiers December 13, 1787. Their daughter Lucinda Fiers married Elijah Braswell September 30, 1817.

In the name of God amen I George Gurley Sr of the County of Southampton in the Parish of St. Luke being of sound and disposing mind and memory thanks be given to almighty for the same and knowing that is appointed unto all men once to die and being possessed of estate real and personal --- dispose of the same in form and manner as following.

To wit: I give unto my loving wife one bed and furniture where we live. Item: I give unto my loving son George Gurley Jr my plantation. Item: I give unto my loving son John Gurley all my wearing cloathesltem: I give unto my loving daughter, Mary West the bed and furniture that went by the name of hers. Item: I give unto my loving daughter Fathey Sellers 4 - of current money. Item: I give unto grandson George Edwards my mare, bridle and saddle.

FIRST I recommend my Soul into the Hands of Allmighty God hoping through the Merits of my blessed Saviour to receive Pardon of all my Sins and my Body to be decently buried at the Discretion of my Executrix hereafter named, and as for my Worldly Estate I dispose of the same as followeth


ITEM I Give & Bequeath to my loving Wife Mary Hunter my Land & Plantation whereon I lately lived, lying on the first Swamp of Black Water in the said County of Isle of Wight to her and her Heirs forever to be sold for the Payment of my Debts, but if my said Wife can conveniently pay my Debts out of my personal Estate without selling the said Land, then I Give and Bequeath the said Land & Plantation to my loving Wife Mary during her Natural Life, and after her Decease I Give and Bequeath the same to my Daughter Frances Hunter to her and her Heirs forever, upon Condition that she pay to my Daughter Rodith Hunter, the Child which I had by PRISCILLA BRASWELL the Sum of five Pounds Current Money of Virginia.


ITEM I Give and Bequeath to my loving Wife Mary the Use and Labour of my Negro Man Slave named James during her Natural Life and after her Decease, I Give & Bequeath the said Negro Man Slave named James to my Son Seth Hunter and his Heirs forever, upon Condition that he pay to my said Daughter Rodith Hunter when he possesses the said Slave the sum of five Pounds Current Money of Virginia.


ITEM I Give and Bequeath to my loving Wife Mary Hunter the use and Labour of my Negro Man Slave named Bristol during her Natural Life and after her Decease I Give & Bequeath the said Negro Slave named Bristol to my Son Emanuel Hunter and his Heirs for ever, upon Condition that he pay to my Daughter the said Rodith Hunter the Sum of five Pounds Current Money of Virginia when he possesses the said Negro Slave.


ITEM I Give and Bequeath unto my loving Wife Mary the use of all my Personal Estate during her natural Life and after her Decease I Give the same to be equally divided between my four Children, Frances Hunter, Seth Hunter, Emanuel Hunter and Rodith Hunter to them and their Heirs forever, And lastly I do appoint and Constitute my loving Wife Mary Hunter my whole and Sole Executrix of this my last Will & Testament hereby revoaking and making Void all former Wills by me heretofore made In Witness whereof I hereunto set my Hand & Affixed my Seal this second Day of May one Thousand Seven Hundred & fifty Nine.
