William Braswell & Sarah

- September 9, Richard Towle in his will named "my three youngest children of Susanna Braswell, Richard, William and Elizabeth Braswell"and his "loving friend" John Riggs as his executor. (IOW Co., VA W & DB 2 P. 323)


1714 - October 22, Susannah Braswell in her will named son Richard, son William, granddaughter Elizabeth Braswell, daughter Ann, grandson John Riggs, son James. (IOW Co., VA WB 3 P 304)

1731 - June 11, Richard Vick, 375 acres (N.L.) Isle of Wight County, south side of Nottoway River adjacent William Seller & Richard Braswell. 15 Shillings & Imp of 5 persons: Maren Prater, John Colesell, Wm. Key, Tho Fisher, Katherine Nickson. (Patent Book 14 Page 155)


1735 - December, Power of Attorney from John Penney and Susannah his wife to Richard Braswell to sell 150 acres to Daniel Storey originally part of Richard Washington's December 16, 1714 patent on Nottoway Swamp bounded by Bardings Branch witnessed by Wm (+) Braswell & John (signed) Braswell. (IOW Co., VA DB 5 1736-1741 Part 1 Pg 17)


1736 - June 22, Moses Faircloth sold 100 acres to Richard Brassell on Nottoway Swamp bounded by Bardens Branch witnessed by Wm (+) Brassell & John (signed) Brassell. (IOW Co., VA DB 5 1736-1741 Pg. 36-39)


1744 - April 21, From Richard Braswell's will: "I do hereby Give full power and Authority unto my Son William Braswell (whom I likewise make make {sic} and Ordain to be my only & sol Extor of this my last Will & Testament) to set up and sell the Land whereon I now live at publick Sale for ready Money to the Highest bider and after so done I give the Money to him and my Son Joseph Braswell whom I likewise Ordain to be Extor with him to be Equally Divided between them...Daughter Elizabeth Braswell...Son John Braswell after the death of my loving Wife... 1746 - January 12, Richard Vick 250 acres in Isle of Wight County, North side of Nottoway River, of Bardens Branch, corner of Ann Thornton's line, corner of John Jent's line, Richard Braswell's line. (Land patent Book 24 Pg. 613-614)


1746 - March 12, Joseph Brasswell and his wife Sarah & William Braswell and his wife Sarah sell their father's 100 acres to Richard Vick for 19 pounds. Joseph (mark) Brasswell, William (W) Brasswell. (IOW Co., VA DB 7 1744-1747 Part 2 Pg. 445-448)


1749 - Southampton Co., VA formed from Isle of Wight County.


NOTE that Northampton County North Carolina is across the border from Southampton County Virginia.


1749 - May 23, Arthur Sellers to William (W) Braswell, both of Northampton, for 2.3 pds Silver 100 acres. (Northampton Co., NC DB I Pg. 398)


NOTE that 5 years later in 1754 John (signed) Braswell purchased 490 acres adjacent to William (W) Braswell and in 1757 proved the deed when William "of Bladen" sold his 100 acres to John Demery who was a free man of color believed by Demery researchers to be a son of the older John Demery who owned land on Seacock & Lightwood Swamps in Isle of Wight County Virginia.


NOTE that Richard Washington (who gave William's father, Richard, land) on the 16 December 1714 in Isle of Wight County - 300 acres on the south side of the main Blackwater Swamp. Beg.g &c. on the south side of the Seacock Swamp. (Library of Virginia) Compare with 1735 POA.


NOTE that on 8 Sep 1732 James Joyner of Carolina sold to John Demaris of Isle of Wight 118 acres on the south side of Seacock Swamp. (IOW Co., VA DB 4 Pg. 233)


1750 - Anson County formed from Bladen County.


1752 - November 9, Richard Vick sold to Albridgton Jones 6 acres adj. sd. Jones' mill and Nottoway Swamp on the north side of the Bridge Road which was part of 100 acres sold to Vick by William Braswell and Joseph Braswell. (Southampton Co., VA DB 1 Pg. 412-414)


NOTE that the land Joseph & William Braswell sold in Isle of Wight County Virginia in 1746 is located in Southampton County in the above 1752 deed.



1757 - January 3, William Braswell of Bladen County to John Demery of Northampton County for 14 pounds 100 acres joining Arthur Sellers, Thomas Boon & John Braswell. Wm (W) Braswell Wit: John (signed) Braswell, Elizabeth (signed) Epperson, Sarah (signed) Braswell. Proved by John (signed) Braswell. (Northampton Co., NC DB II Pg. 345)

1763 - Lazerus Johnston, NC Early Census Index, Bladen County.


1779 - January 8, a William Brazil entered 100 acres on Pelhams' Fork in Anson County NC.


NOTE that many of Bladen's early records were destroyed by fires in 1769 and 1893.
