BYRD BRAZIL

The data which follow are found in the papers on file in pension claim, S. 31571, based upon service of Byrd Brasil in the Revolutionary War.

Byrd Brazil (as he signed his name) was born in North Carolina; the date and exact place of his birth, and the names of his parents are not shown. He enlisted May 5, 1775, at which time he resided in Chatham County, North Carolina, served in Captain William Brinkley's company, 3r North Carolina regiment, marched to Charleston, South Carolina, where he remained about three months, thence to Savannah, thence to Osabow Island, thence to Halifax, North Carolina, thence to Belle Haven on the Potomac, thence to General Washington's headquarters at Valley Forge, at which place the army was reduced and Captain Brinkley returned to North Carolina and Byrd Brazil was placed in Captain Phil Taylor's company, from which company, still at Valley Forge, he was transferred to Captain Benjamin Williams' company, marched to Monmouth under Colonel Morgan, reached there after the battle, was discharged in October 1778, near New York, from Captain Benjamin Williams' company, Colonel John Patten's 2d North Carolina Battalion, and marched south under Major Colonel Davidson. Byrd Brazil was allowed pension on his application executed January 7, 1833, at which time he resided in Hancock County, Georgia. He was aged then sixty-nine years. Grave not found. 1811 - November 26, James Mathews and Dinah Mathews to Edmond Lamar, Deed, $850, 187.5 acres being part of 300 acres originally granted to William Breazeal on 12 December 1768 who died intestate and his only legal surviving heirs were Betsey Breazeal wife of Willis Breazeal and Dinah Mathews wife of above named James Mathews who after their fathers decease divised said land by agreement without administering on his estate. The tract now transfered is the dividend of Dinah Mathews, on Loyds Creek of Stephens Creek of Savannah River adjacent Charles Hammond, Samuel Dagnal. Wit: James Hunter, A. Hunter. Jeptha's wife Edith is the daughter of Valentine Braswell Jr & Elizabeth Pitts of Chatham County North Carolina.

Siddey Braswell is often misreported to be Siddey Pitts. But it was Siddey's mother Elizabeth who was actually the Pitts, and named in the will of of John Pitts Senior. Elizabeth Pitts married Valentine Braswell Jr., who was the son of Valentine "V".

Peiteet are held and firmly bound to their Honors the Justices of the Inferior Court for said county, sitting for ordinary purposes, and their successors in office, in the just and full sum of fifteen Hundred dollars, for the payment of which sum, to the said Justices, and their successors in office, we bind ourselves, our heirs, executors, and administrators, in the whole and for the whole sum, jointly and severally, firmly by these presents, sealed with our seals, and dated this fourth day of September one thousand eight hundred and forty eight.

THE CONDITION of the above obligation is such, That if the above bound Jacob S. Brazell admr of the goods, chattels and credits of Jesse Brazell late of this county, deceased, do make a true and perfect inventory of all and singular, the goods, chattels and credits of said deceased, which have or shall come to the hands, possession or knowledge of the said Jacob S. Brazell or in the hands or possession of any other person or persons for him and the same, so made, do exhibit in the said Court of Ordinary, when he shall be thereunto required: and such goods, chattels and credits, do well and truly administer according to law, and do make a just and true account of his actings and doings therein, when he shall be thereunto requiredby the Court of Ordinary for said county, and all the rest of the goods, chattels and credits, which shall be found remaining upon the account of the said administration, the same being first allowed by the court, shall deliver and pay to such person or persons, respectively, as are entitled to the same by law; and if it shall hereafter appear, that any last will and testament was made by the said deceased, and the same shall be proved before the court, and the executors obtain a certificate of the probate thereof, and the said Jacob S. 1793 - June 3, Deposition: Edward Couch said that he was present when Rachel Brazel & her son John McKenney had a conversation respecting a negro boy named Prince, who was the property of Valentine Brazel, husband of said Rachel Brazel. That said Rachel told the desponent that she was unwilling Valentine Brazel should ever have the boy & since her son had no money she would lend him a dollar which might be returned to be imprescences of the deponent as evidence of a contract..that the deponant is well convinced from the conversation that she intended to defraud her husband who was absent in Georgia of his right to said boy as she was provided with other property of less value which might have been sold in case of distress but to his knowledge said Valentine Brazel had furnished her with such necessities... In 1740, in Waterford County, Ireland, there was born one William Barron, descendant of the Barons of Burnchurch, Kilkenny County, Ireland, and hence a lineal descendant of Lord Gerald of Offaby. The patronymic name of the Barons of this church was Fitzgerald but the Fitzgerald was dropped and the cognomen Barron became more prominant.

The wife of William Barron, Prudence Davis, was born about 1742. They were married about 1760 and two or three of their children were born in Ireland. The family came to Warren County, Georgia, about 1766 and William Barron became the captain of a company in the Revolutionary War. He was wounded in the battle of Augusta, Georgia, and fell into the hands of the Tories who hired an Indian to behead him. They put his head as a trophy on a pole erected in the center of Augusta where it remained three weeks until the Whigs regained the town and took it down. The widow, Prudy Barron, nee Davis, died in Warren County, Georgia, about 1815. The names of only four of their children are known: John Barron, Jr., born about 1763 in Ireland, Elizabeth Barron born October 25, 1765, most likely in Ireland, William Barron born July, 1767, in Warren County, Georgia, Samuel Barron born July 4, 1768, in Warren County, Georgia. Quite possibly there were other children older and younger.

Samuel Barron married March 22, 1793, to Joannah Braswell, moved to Jones County about 1805 and died there on June 20, 1826. He left eight sons and three daughters: Sarah, Nancy, Rebecca, James, Wiley, William, Benjamin, Jonathon, Willis, Thomas Green, and Averton.

Know all Men by these Presents That I Willis Brassell of Brooks Station in the County of Fayette and State of Georgia, being in ill health but of sound and disposing mind & memory, do make and publish this my last will and testament, As to my worldly estate and all the property real, personal or mixed of which I shall ???? seized and possessed of, or to which I shall be entitled at the time of my decease, I devise, bequeath and dispose thereof in the manner following to wit:

First, My will is that all my just debts and funeral expenses shall by my executors hereinafter named be paid out of my estate as soon after my decease as shall by them be found convenient.

Secondly, I give devise and bequeath to my present wife Fanney and each of my two children by her Jesse & Nellie? one hundred dollars:

Thirdly, I will that my grand Son Willis Neal by daughter Martha have one hundred dollars

Fourthly, I will that the remainder of my Estate be divided equally among the rest of my legal heirs.

Lastly, I do nominate and appoint my Sons Titus W. Brassell & John W. Brassell to be the Executors of this my last Will and testament.

NOTE: William and John lived adjacent to each other in Northampton Co., NC, William was there in 1749 and John followed him there from Southampton Co., VA, 5 years later, in 1754.


NOTE also that Richard Braswell who died 1745 IOW Co. VA had sons named William & John, John always signing his name, while William used a "W" for his mark in 1746/7 when he sold his father's IOW Co., VA land with his brother Joseph with their wives, each named Sarah.
