– February 9, HIRAM CRABTREE’s answer to Bill of Complaint of JOHN CARTER against him an others filed in the chancery Court of Gainsboro. Was in regard to land purchased of PRISCILLA CARTER on October 15, 1850. “his co-defendant (John) BRASWELL purchased said land of said (James G.) CUNNINGHAM and his co-defendant sold his land to BENJAMIN BRASWELL and that said CUNNINGHAM executed to said BENJ. BRASWELL a deed of said land – and that said BENJAMIN BRASWELL sold said land to said PRISCILLA CARTER -----that the deed from said CUNINGHAM to said BENJ. BRASWELL was an unregistered deed and by agreement was cancelled and the said CUNNINGHAM made to respondent a deed to same.” “Respondent here states that he is not advised as to whether his co-defendant JOHN BRASWELL ever had any legal title to said land or not and requires proof” (Loose District/Chancery Court Papers Vol. 1839-1915, Genealogical Abstract by Bonnie Parker & recorded on USGenWeb, Jackson Co., TN) This was 50 acres IN Dist. 4 of Jackson County. HIRAM CRABTREE received a quit claim deed from J. G. CUNNINGHAM.
